Social Studies

Students are assessed twice a term in Social Studies. They are assessed on their performance in the Inquiry for each unit and they are also assessed on their Learning Journals.

Inquiry:

For each unit students will carry out their own inquiry. They will be taught to plan, gather, sort and present relevant and accurate information in the appropriate format demonstrating awareness of each of the Global Learning Intentions. The inquiry process is designed to assist student in developing processing and communication skills.

Learning Journals:

Approximately once every two weeks students will be expected to write a learning journal entry demonstrating they are reflecting on their own performance and identifying ways that they can improve their own learning. The aim of the Learning Journal has been deigned to encourage independent learning habits in students.

Below is an outline of the Year 9 course. These are the global learning intentions for each unit of work.

Climate Change:

  • To understand the causes of Climate Change.
  • To understand the environmental impacts of climate change.
  • To understand the social and cultural impacts of climate change.
  • To understand solutions for climate change.

Technology:

  • To understand what technology is.
  • To understand significant technological changes.
  • To understand the impact of technology on people.
  • To understand future technological changes and their impacts.
  • To understand different attitudes towards technology

Migration:

  • To understand what push factors are.
  • To understand what pull factors are.
  • To understand the environmental and cultural impact of migration.

 

Government:

  • To understand what government is.
  • To understand how democracy operates in New Zealand.
  • To understand the jobs of government in New Zealand
  • To understand an alternative system of government.

Below is an outline of the Year 10 course. These are the global learning intentions for each unit of work.

Crisis and Response:

  • To understand that significant crisis’ have causes.
  • To understand that crisis’ have short and long term impacts.
  • To understand that people respond to crisis in both the short-term and long-term.
  • To understand that the response of people to a crisis can be evaluated.

Human Rights:

  • To understand the declaration of Human Rights.
  • To understand how the human rights of people are breached.
  • To understand how people try to promote human rights.

NZ History:

  • To understand the importance of the Treaty of Waitangi.
  • To understand the causes, and impacts of significant events in New Zealand’s history.
  • To understand perspectives of the Treaty of Waitangi over time.
  • To understand how New Zealand’s past continues to affect us.

Migration:

  • To understand push factors.
  • To understand pull factors.
  • To understand the cultural and environmental impact of migration.
  • To understand how migration might continue to affect people in the future.
