Introduction
The PTA plays an integral role in the life of Wairarapa College.
Our aim is to foster goodwill through organizing fundraising and social events that bring the college and the community together, and to organize fundraising which will supplement the college’s existing funds and thus provide resources and equipment that the college may not otherwise be able to obtain.
Our current committee consists of 10 parents and 3 representatives from the college, with a regular update by a representative from the college hostel and Board of Trustees.
Our major fundraiser each year is the school gala – an event where many people come out of the woodwork to assist the teaching staff to ‘make it happen’. The support of this event is greatly appreciated. The funds from the gala have, in the past, been distributed to a wish list. In late 2008 it was decided to ask the students where the funds could be best allocated. After receiving many suggestions – some rather creative, it was decided that improvements be made to the school canteen and directly outside the canteen area – a place in the school that had been overlooked for several years. With more students in the college and therefore more who purchase lunch there, this was seen as a real need.
The first project was to provide a covered area for outdoor eating. After much planning, and Council consents being approved, stage one was completed during the July school holidays at a cost of around $20,000.
The next step is construct extra seating, a project the college Technical department is going to help with. Hopefully we can then tidy up the general interior of the Canteen. For this we have the help of a $5,000 health grant.
Along with this project, the PTA has been able to contribute $26,000 for new chairs and desks for the hall, $5,600 towards new appliances and cutlery for the hall, and $1,500 for books and vouchers for Prize Givings.
The committee is always on the lookout for new members, so come along to a meeting – they are on the 1st Monday of each month at 7pm in the staffroom (except when that falls in the school holidays) – we promise that we wont bite !
Like the students, committee members move through the college and then onto another life – so new members are always welcome.
